Recently, our client, who lives in Rhinestone street, Fourways, phoned us with a broken garage door motor. He reported the following:
- Firstly, that he had an old garage door motor
- Secondly, that the garage door motor was broken
- In particular, the garage door motor’s shaft was broken
- Furthermore, his garage door motor was making a terrible noise when he pressed the remote
He had an old Digidoor II garage door opener where the worm or drive shaft had broken out of the back of the motor. When the worm broke, it also damaged the carriage mechanism. Because he has an old 220V motor we recommended a new 24V DC Centurion X-trac motor
with battery backup. With a 1 year guarantee and super silent operation we had a happy client in no time. As part of installing a new garage door motor, we service the garage door. Your garage door must be in good working order in order for your motor to function optimally. Do you need to have your old remotes working with your new garage motor? Installing a new Garage door motor for another Fourways’ client…
Another client that stays in the Castellano Estate in Cedar road West in Fourways had a broken garage door motor. She had a Digi24 garage door motor. The Digi24 garage door motors are no longer supported by Digidoor. Therefore there are no longer parts available to repair them.
These motors used to be very fast, and this can be a problem. A very fast motor can easily break the garage door brackets or hinges if a problem occurs while it is moving so fast. We installed a New Centurion X-trac garage door motor for her. Don’t let a broken garage door motor be an inconvenience for you. Contact Mr Garage now for a quote on a new garage door motor and installation. We are usually able to install a new garage door motor for you the same day or within a day of receiving the deposit.

As in all of the areas that we cover, we have countless examples of garage door motor repairs and new installations that we can share with you. Here is an outline of some of the jobs we have had where we have needed to install new garage door motors in Randburg.
New Garage Door Motors – Fairland
Our client in Johannes street in Fairland in Randburg had a broken Digidoor II motor. It is possible to have this motor repaired, but it does take 3 to 10 working days and is dependent on the manufacturer. However, the client wanted a working garage door motor immediately. So, we firstly serviced the garage door and set the spring tension; and then installed a new Centurion X-trac motor
See the image below for the Broken Digidoor II motor. Contact Mr Garage for all you New garage door motor requirement. We usually install New Centution X-trac or SD04 motors as they are the best quality motors and have the best support in the South African market.
Broken Digidoor II motor
New Garage Door Motors – North Riding
Our client in North Riding, Randburg had a old and broken Pro-Alpha garage door motor. Parts for the Pro-Alpha motors are not available anymore. Furthermore, all the new generation motors use 24V DC motors, so, by switching to one of the new motors, the main advantage is you have battery backup and can open your door during load shedding and power outages. We replaced the client’s old motor with a new X-Trac garage door motor from Centurion.
New Garage Door Motors – Northcliff
A client residing in Northcliff, Randburg phoned us with a broken garage spring and a broken garage door motor. They had an old digidoor III motor. After the spring had broken, the chain link mechanism for the motor also broke. It is possible to repair the old Digidoor chain link mechanism, but on the old version of the motor it will keep breaking and you have to get a new gearbox and pc-board. This makes repairs not worth it and it is better to install a new garage door motor. Our preference is to install only Centurion garage door motors
, because they have the best quality and support available. We weighed the garage door and installed the correct springs for a 140kg wooden garage door of standard height. Once the correct springs are installed and the door is working properly, we could then replace the old motor with a new Centurion X-Trac motor.
New Garage Door Motors – Honeydew
Our client in Honeydew, Randburg had a broken garage door motor. It was on old Gemini 220V Garage door motor. However, these motors are un-supported and cannot be repaired. As a result, we serviced the client’s double steel sectional door and installed a new Centurion X-trac motor for him.
New Garage Door Motors – Linden
In Linden, Randburg we received a call from a client that requested a new garage door motor. Their garage door was not automated, so they where opening and closing the garage door by hand. So, we quoted the client on a new Centurion X-Trac garage door motor. They accepted the quote and therefore we installed the motor for them. Do you need a new garage door motor installed in Sandton? Please contact Mr Garage to install a new garage door motor for you in Sandton. We specialize in garage door automation
, garage door repairs
and garage door installations
Our client in Melrose road in Sandton recently called us and reported the following:
- My garage door motor is broken
- It was making a funny sound before it broke
- My garage door motor does not want to work at the moment
She had a Pro-Alpha garage door motor. There is basically no support for these motors at the moment. They are old 220V motors and we strongly recommend that you install a new Centurion garage door motor
. We did the following tests
- We first checked if there is power at the motor (220V in this case). In some cases the plug or db board tripped and, because of this, the motor stopped working.
- Then we check if there is 12V or 24V present at the receiver. Sometimes a fuse has broken and the receiver cannot trigger the motor.
- So, can you trigger the motor manually? In this case we could not trigger the motor.
- Finally, we check the carriage and drive or chain mechanism. The carriage was stripped so it would not be able to lift the door any more.
We installed a new Centurion X-trac motor and had a happy client in no time.
Another garage door motor installed in Sandton…
In another case, we did a lot of work for a client in the Sandton Country Club Estate. The garage door broke and, in the process, the pine jams got damaged and needed to be replaced. A couple of months before this happened, one of his garage door springs broke
and another company installed new springs for him. The problem, however, was that this other company did not weigh the door and installed incorrect springs. The door never worked properly. This damages the motor. We weighed the door and installed the correct springs. After the door was working properly we installed a new Centurion SD04 garage door motor.
And a third garage door motor installed in Sandton…
In yet another case, a client in Coleraine Dr in Riverclub, Sandton, had a broken garage door motor. The type of motor was an old imported 220V motor with no local support. Mr Garage only installs well-supported local brands of garage door motors. Our preference is the Centurion X-trac and SD04 motors. We replaced the motor and, once more, have a happy client.
Read some important notes on garage door automation
Recently we had a client phone us for garage door repairs Fourways, Sandton – Campbell street. There were some broken garage door hinges.
We found a couple of problems with the door. The client has a custom size door, so it is wider than a normal double door.
- A couple of months ago one of his springs broke. And a different company replaced his springs
- They replaced only one spring
- This company also replaced the broken spring with a spring that is manufactured for caravan-size doors. The client does not have a caravan size door
- A couple of hinges where broken
- The door is heavy, the motor is taking strain and it does not move properly
Garage Door Repairs Fourways – Solutions
When your garage door spring breaks, you have to replace both springs
. If you only replace one spring, you are leaving your door with one old spring that will break soon and that wont have the same lifting power as a new spring. We always weigh and measure the door so that we can fit the correct springs. Springs are made for a particular door height and weight. Such as 70kg or 80kg for a 2.1 meter door etc. If you install the wrong springs, the door will not operate properly. Either, the closed door will be too heavy and therefore pulling down when you are opening it. Or it will be pulling up too much and closing it will be difficult. It is very important to install the correct springs and tension them properly. In this case, the hinges broke because the springs were incorrect and were causing the motor to apply lots of pressure on the door while it was pushing it closed. We replaced the hinges because, if you have broken hinges the panels don’t align properly and will cause more hinges to break. With too much stress on the panels they can also start to break. We do not advise replacing broken panels
. You would need to replace the entire door
which is an expensive exercise. If the incorrect springs are installed it can also put strain on your garage door motor and it will also break. It is very important to always have a mechanically sound garage door. You need to look after all aspects of your garage door. Including the springs, bearings, hinges, and the garage door motor.
The Centurion RDO II garage door opener is a great motor to install for your roll-up garage door. As usual, there are a couple of options for automating roll-up doors. The one that we recommend is the Centurion
RDO II. We install the motor on either the left or the right hand side of the door. This will depend on available space and cabling. The shaft of the garage door goes through the RDO motor and the motor fits through one of the wheels of the garage door.
Roll-up garage door
A roll-up door consists of a single piece of steel. The doors rolls up into a cylinder. It is important that your door is in a good mechanical condition before considering automating it. If your door is older than 10 years you should consider installing a new door before automating it with an RDO. A roll-up garage door is sometimes also known as a roll-a-door or roller door.
Roll-up door or roll-a-door installed by Mr Gate Mr Garage
Basic Features of the Centurion RDO II Garage Door Motor
The Centurion RDO is a 24V DC motor. So during power outages you have battery backup. The motor is strong and can easily lift any single roll-up door. Please note that old doors need to be serviced before installing this motor. A door that is not working optimally will damage the motor. Whisper-quiet operation means this motor makes very little noise during operation. It has anti-crushing technology to detect if something is obstructing the door during operation. Plus, you can also fit Infrared Safety Beams and use the auto-close feature to automatically close the door after 30 seconds of passing the beams. Furthermore, it has a wall mounter controller with a courtesy light. We can programme the on-board code-hopping receiver to:
- Open/close garage door.
- Switch Courtesy Light on and off.
- Override automatic closing.
- Electronically lock the system for added security.
Installing the RDO
Correct installation of the Centurion RDO II motor, together with a mechanically sound garage door, will give you many years of great service from the motor. However, there are a couple of things we regularly see that should not be done by the installer.
- The installer should not install the RDO on a wheel that is not compatible by using a hack saw to modify the wheel so that the motor fits. This creates a weakness in the wheel, and very often the wheel breaks and can cause both the motor and the door to break.
- If needed, we can install a wheel adapter or a compatible wheel. The fork of the motor should fit over one of the webs of the garage door wheel.
- The door needs to be serviced so that it is in a good working condition before the motor gets installed. Many garage door motor installers can only install the motor, but do not have a lot of knowledge regarding garage door mechanics and working. We often find that a motor is installed incorrectly and that the door is not working properly.
Using your RDO
Using your Centurion RDO II is very simple. You simply press the button for the required function on the remote and it should work by either opening your door or switching on a light etc. There are however times when either the motor or the garage door experiences a problem and you need to understand how to get the motor in manual mode or disengaged. To do this, you will notice a red cord on the side of the motor. You need to pull gently down on the cord until it clicks. If you look at the motor, there is a lever that is pulled down to engage and disengage the motor. This is lever is spring loaded. Always make sure that the cord is hanging on the side of the door and motor so that is does not get broken when you open and close the door.
Fault finding and problem solving
When you experience a power failure or load shedding, your motor has battery backup and should be able to open the door about 10 to 15 times. Please note if you have external receivers or beams connected to the motor that it will consume battery power and after a couple of hours you may find that your door does not open. So, if you know the power outage is going to be a couple of hours, then put your door on manual so that you can easily open your automated garage door
. Please contact us if the following happens:
- My door opens but does not want to close
- My door closes but does not want to open
- Nothing happens when I press the button
- Someone drove into the door and it does not want to work now

Our client in Beverly Estate, Fourways, called complaining about a broken garage door. Our process is always to capture the client’s details on our online system. This enables us to manage our job-list carefully so that we can attend to client’s problems as fast as possible. Please do not operate your garage door motor when you suspect that your garage door or garage door motor has broken. Every time you operate your garage door motor with a broken garage door, you can cause more damage to both the door and the garage door motor. In addition, it could be dangerous.
Broken Garage Door Assessment
As part of our garage door assessment we always follow a set process:
- Firstly, we take the spring tension down completely – In this way we can get an accurate measurement of the weight of the door
- Then we weigh the door
- Next we measure the door height (We need both the weight and height of the door to determine what size the springs should be.)
- We inspect the torsion pipe, bearing brackets, hinges and rollers
- Finally, we create a quote to repair the broken garage door.
We found that the springs needed replacement, but also the torsion pipe and bearing brackets. If you have an older door it is advisable that you change the bearing brackets. There are 3 bearing brackets that hold the torsion pipe and springs in place. If the pipe can’t turn properly, the door will not move correctly and more pressure will be put on the door and springs. You may find that your springs will have to be replaced much quicker if you use the old components. We replaced the springs, torsion pipe and bearing brackets for our client. Now his door is working well and will continue to do so for a long time.
This was another job for garage door spring repair Fourways. Our client is in the Fernbrook estate in Bushwillow Road, Fourways, and was experience a problem with their garage door. One of our teams went out and saw that a garage door spring
had snapped and needed replacement.
It is important to stop using the door immediately when a spring breaks. It can be very dangerous as the garage door could break further and fall on someone or something. Furthermore, every time you try and operate your garage door motor when your garage door has a broken spring, you increase the risk of breaking your garage door motor.
Garage Door Spring Repair Fourways – Assessment
We arrived at the client’s property and assessed the door. As part of our garage door assessment – particularly in the case of broken springs – we do the following:
- First of all, we take down the spring tension completely
- Then we weigh the door
- We also measure the door height. This is because the size of springs required depends on the weight of the door as well as its height.
- We look at the Torsion Pipe, bearing brackets, hinges and rollers – as well as the general condition of the door.
- Finally, we create a quote based on the components that need replacing.
Garage Door Spring Repair Process
Remember that with garage door parts such as springs and cables
, it is important to replace both sets at the same time and not just one of the pair. This keeps the garage door operating smoothly and evenly. If you replace only one spring or one cable, the other spring or cable will most likely soon break and need replacing too. You will also put strain on your garage door and garage door opener. When garage doors are repaired and their springs are replaced, the spring tension is set so that the door moves well and is also adjusted for the current installed motor. Sometimes the motors are old and the door weight needs to be adjusted so that the motor can both open and close the door. Please note that after about 8 weeks the spring tension can be checked again. This is a simple process. You put your garage door motor on manual and open the door manually. Is the door relatively easy to lift. If you are strugling to lift the door, the motor will struggle to lift the door and can potentially break. If your door is too heavy, please give us a call so we can adjust your spring tension for you. This was another example of our garage door spring repair Fourways services.

We recently had a client for a garage door motor repair Linden, Randburg – 9th Street. Previously we had done a lot of work on their garage door hardware
and also on their garage door motor
. We replaced their garage door opener batteries a couple of months ago. However, recently there was a power outage, and, after a couple of hours, the motor stopped working. The first step in understanding the problem is to understand where the problem is occurring. When we arrived at the client we unplugged the garage door motor. Next we started testing the motor using only the battery backup. The motor opened the door many times without a problem. So it is clear that the motor and battery back-up were fine. But that something was discharging the batteries during the power outage.
There is an external receiver connected to the motor. This is the piece of equipment that communicates with the remotes and then causes the motor to either open or close the garage door. A garage door motor also has a PC board. What you have to keep in mind is that both the external receiver and the pc-board of the motor consume a little bit of current continuously. This means that, even if you are not opening and closing the garage door and the motor is not operating, the pc-board and the receiver will continue to draw current from the battery. The batteries used for this particular motor are 2 x 12V 1.3 A/h. Please note that if a lead acid battery is rated as 1.3 A/h that you will probably only get about 75% of that rated value over an hour. (In other words, only 0.975 amps per hour). So, if the pc board and external receiver together consume about 300 mA continuously, the batteries will last between 3 and 4 hours. This is exactly the amount of time that passed before the client tried to operate the motor and found that it would not open the garage door.
Garage Door Motor Repair Linden Solution
The solution for this type of problem will depend on a couple of factors. How much time does the client expect the motor be able to last during a power outage? What budget does the client have? 1) It is possible to install 2 x 12V 7.2 A/h batteries. This should give you roughly 5 to 6 times the time as the 1.3 A/h batteries.
2) A different external receiver can be installed that consumes less power
3) Solar power solutions or generators / inverters are other options (these are usually quite pricey though)
12V 7.2 Ah Battery
The X-trac, a Centurion
garage door motor, is Mr Garage Mr Garage’s favorite garage motor to install for automating a garage door
. Suitable for both sectional and tip up garage door, but not a roll up garage door. And used for both steel and wooden doors alike. With 24V battery backup to make sure that your door opens during power outages or load shedding and super quiet operation you can rely on the X-trac garage door opener to give you great service and performance for many years.
The motor design is split in 2 sections (See image below). Firstly there is the 24V motor part moving up and down the shaft which is in turn connected to the door. It has a steel cord with a red knob that is pulled gently to engage and disengage the motor. This can be done at any point of the shaft.
Centurion X-Trac Motor
Secondly, there is the control box with pc-board , power supply and batteries. This section is static, so it does not move and is at the end of the motor shaft.
